Soooo, my anniversary present to my parents was to clean out their garage. I found this giant box of slides and movies and here is one that I loved. Stuart emailed it to Dad and here is his commentary.
How well I remember-
Taken at a small motel near Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico 1959. Marguerite had graduated summa cum laude from Methodist Hospital nursing school – this was our first married vacation. The red 1959 Austin Healey Sprite sold for $2,043.00, had a 2.2 liter twin overhead cam engine with dual SU carburetors, got an amazing 43 MPG (highway) and would cruise at 110 MPH if you were crazy enough. They sell today for $20K+ restored.
We left town with $158.00 cash – no overall credit card usage yet across America. Drove to Grand Canyon and back, bought gas, ate meals, did a sightseeing flight over the canyon and returned with about $12 left to our $80 a month apartment near the medical center. I was a Junior Electrical Engineer working for Dresser for $800 a month, and
we believed that we were bullet proof!
